Therapy -  San Diego Health and FitnessThere are different types of counselors and therapists, including Licensed Clinical Social Workers, Marriage and Family Therapists, Psychologists, Psychiatrists, and so on… but which one is right for you?

A November 1995 survey in Consumer Reports reported that people in therapy generally rated psychologists, clinical social workers, and psychiatrists about as equally effective. The study suggests that your experience will depend on your own individual needs. Asking a trusted close friend and your doctor for recommendations is a good first step to take in finding a therapist that is right for you.

Tips on choosing a therapist

  1. Find a therapist you trust and feel comfortable with in their office environment.
  2. Make sure the commute and office hours are convenient for you.
  3. Ask the therapist his/her area of expertise. Does it match your needs?
  4. How long has the therapist been in practice?
  5. Ask about their counseling style.
  6. Do they take insurance?

It is important that you feel safe, respected and at ease with a therapist and that you share the same values and beliefs. You will be building a relationship and if it does not feel right, check out other therapists.
